SS Officer’s M36 Chain Dagger – D1064

Offering a very nice mid period SS officer’s chain dagger in untouched condition. Though not the rarest edged weapon produced during the infamous era, they certainly rate among one of the most desirable daggers manufactured to have come out of that time. They are absolutely impressive to say the least, as they are fearsome with an evil personified appearance.

For an SS dagger and especially an M36 chain, the grip on this edged weapon remains in absolutely fantastic condition. The ebony style wood is in the perfect state of preservation, being void of any repairs, splits, cracks, chips, or even any pressure marks. Something that is rarely ever seen with any SS grip, no matter what the vintage of production was. An excellent eagle has been set perfectly centered and straight in the middle of this high contour grip. It is the copper variety that we occasionally see with SS chain daggers manufactured during the mid and later period era. Where in the past I’ve always felt that these emblems made of copper were silver plated over the surface. I’m not so sure now, because this one is nicely burnished black in all of the recesses. Directly above it the SS runes remains in near perfect condition, void of any hits, chips, or enamel damage. It is the nickel variety lightening bolt emblem, which once again observed with this particular vintage of dagger. Both upper and lower crossguards exhibit a dull surface patina as well as plating loss, typical of the hardware which was afforded edged weapon manufactures during this later timeframe. I honestly would not attempt to clean or alter fittings like this. As they are untouched and have not been polished in the past, and best kept in the same state as found. Wrapped around the hilt is the portapee that this dagger came with. By all intent and purposes it looks original to this hilt assembly, as shown by the wear patterns.

A beautiful scabbard accompanies this SS officer’s chain dagger. The shell remains straight, void of any hits, dings, splits, dog legs, dents, or anything else. A fantastic period blue oxide is nearly 100% on this shell, both obverse and reverse alike. On top of that there is approximately 25% of the original factory protective lacquer still present on this sheath to boot. All 3 plated fittings are in good shape, and securely fastened to the shell with the proper factory dome head screws. The reverse of the upper hardware fitting exhibits a single spot of bubbling, as shown in the photos. As for the chain, it is the plated Type B2 variety, with nearly 100% of that beautiful factory finish over the die struck steel links. These are the most prevalent configuration we see used during this later production timeframe. All of the links are in excellent condition, and retain their original connectors. A couple of those fasteners have thinned in regards to the solder on the reverse, though nothing is loose nor compromised. The reverse of the second link on the upper span is properly stamped with the culture proof mark. The Wotan’s knot is present and intact. It holds the belt clip which functions fine.

We end the description with the blade, and it’s a sweet one to say the least! One minor blemish speck on the reverse toward the tip, and that is basically it. The rest of this baby is load with gorgeous crossgrain, and truly about mint.
