SS Officer’s Chain Dagger B2 – D915
As one of the most popular 3rd Reich edged weapons to the collecting community, these daggers always draw a crowd. Even if your focus and interest is in a different area of German memorabilia. While I must to confess that I am guilty of hogging several of these M36’s for my own personal collection as many of you know, we have started to offer some nice examples up as of recent. As we had 3 coming out of the Show of Show a few days ago, though a couple were sold before we could even get them home. Anyway, here is a decent one in this listing.
The grip to this SS chain dagger is in decent condition. It is a is a high profile contour handle in which the wood has held up respectively well. Though void of any missing unsightly chunks, flaking or pressure marks, there are some small hairliners in the runes area. Certainly nothing is repaired, nor compromises the integrity of the component. As a mid period B2 M36, the eagle is aluminum, while the SS runes button is nickel silver. Both emblems are in nice condition, with excellent detail, minimal wear, and nice detail to each. The plating on the fittings is pretty damn nice for this vintage construction of one of these edged weapons. As many times you see these crossguards exhibiting quite a bit of flaking and wear. A pleasant looking hilt assembly on this SS chain dagger, without a doubt.
The scabbard to this dagger remains straight, void of any hits, dings, splits, or creases. The original period bluing is in above average condition overall. While the obverse displays a nice muted appearance, the reverse is a little lighter with one wear oxidation spot. As with the crossguards on the hilt, the upper and lower shell fitting are steel plated. They remain in excellent shape, void of any hits or creases. Even the lower chape ball is 100%. The chain assembly to this scabbard like all of the other components is plated steel. Each link displays beautiful burnishing to the pebbled backgrounds of the skull & runes raised in relief. As expected, the reverse of the 2nd link in the upper span is SS culture proof stamped. The Wotan cloverleaf clip functions fine. You can see in the photos that it has been period repaired to reinforce it.
And we finish up with the blade. It remains full length, drawn to a needle sharp point, void of any tipping, pitting, sharpening, or cutting edge chips. As shown in the photos there are some light spots / scuffs on the obverse and typical light runner marks. Though nothing has been buffed, cleaned, nor polished on this blade, nor the entire edged weapon. A nice muted crossgrain still graces both obverse and reverse, from lower crossguard to tip. Finally, the Meine Ehre heist Treue SS motto has the light gray burnishing that this blade was etched with.
Truly a decent M36 SS chain dagger, in it’s entirety. SOLD
