Rare Maker Police Officer’s Sword by K&M – D858
Though there are 17 makers of the 3rd Reich Police degen listed in Thomas Wittmann’s SS edged weapon reference, here is one that is not. It is a sword which was manufactured by the Klittermann & Moog edged weapon firm.
A 13 segment typical police style grip starts off the hilt of this rare K&M manufactured degen. It is in good shape, save for one chip at the lower left of the eagle emblem. The wood has been tightly wrapped with the usual decorative groove wire which remains all tight and in place. As for the emblem itself, it is in good condition, nicely toned with a patina which has settled over it. The plating to the pommel, D guard, and upper ferrule is decent, with just some light lifting. Quite a unique beautiful design oak leaf lower ferrule completes the assembly.
No two ways about it, the scabbard to this officer’s sword exhibits quite a few bumps and dents to the surface. Additionally, it has been repainted at one time. Though we would all like to see a better shell to this edged weapon, unfortunately it is what it is. After all, I don’t know of another collector who has even heard of such a rarity as this Klittermann & Moog manufactured police degen. That in itself puts this piece in the scarce category, in spite of the shortcomings of the scabbard. Both upper and lower fittings are held tight to the shell, with the proper period flat head screws.
Beyond the challenges to the scabbard, this degen has one sweet blade to make up for that! Straight, void of anything that would be considered an imperfection, and with a gorgeous matte finish, it truly doesn’t’ get any better. This 31 ½ inch blade perfectly matches up to the length of the scabbard, and is exactly what collectors want to see. On the reverse riccasso is the elusive etched logo which depicts arm / hand clenching a spear, that being the trademark of the Klittermann & Moog edged weapon firm. Truly a fantastic blade, in every sense of the word.
