Personalized 2nd Model Luft by SMF – D887

When it comes to the companies which produced 2nd Model Luft daggers, nothing draws a crowd like a gilded SMF example. Here’s a beauty in this offering.

The Trolon grip to this Luftwaffe officers dagger in in wonder condition. Being light orange on the obverse and more yellow on the reverse, it couldn’t be a more attractive combination. The handle is in excellent condition, and void of any chips, cracks, splits, or missing material. Tightly wrapped around the circumference all of the decorative springy wire is in place. The outstretched eagle crossguard is beautifully burnished with shades of light and dark, creating a striking contrast. On the reverse of the crossguard is a name that is a bit difficult to make out, and even harder to photograph. It looks like Dr. Roux, though I can’t be certain. In any event it is there, and thus personalized to most likely a Luft medical doctor. To complete the hilt assembly is an absolute killer pommel. Not only is it hand enhanced to bring out the highlights of the oak leaves and acorn designs, but take a look at the period gilt on both of the swastikas! This beautiful extra process was only done by a couple of edged weapon firms during the 3rd Reich, and nobody did any better than SMF and what you are seeing here. Finally, wrapped around the ferrule section is the original knot that this dagger came with. It has an atypical bead of some sort as a slide just above the stem.

I don’t think that I’ve had an SMF in the past with as near perfect as a scabbard as the one shown to this dagger. It remains straight, void of any creases, bends, splits, or dog legs, and has the most fantastic airplane gray factory finish that I can recall ever seeing. In spite of a couple specks of wear, it still rates 95%. Beautifully accenting the shell are the light colored aluminum bands that this firm was noted for. 2 flat head screws hold the throat secure and in place.

Finally the blade. It is full length, straight, drawn to a needle sharp tip, and void of any sharpening, tipping, or cutting edge chips. There is a little bit of surface oxidation in a couple spots. But I’m telling you, for everything else this dagger has going, it’s truly not all that detracting. The rest of the plating is excellent on both obverse and reverse. On the back is shown the seated king logo, the trademark of the firm who manufactured this fine edged weapon.

Personalized, gilt, SMF, this baby has it all! SOLD
