Where we used to have several of these beautiful gilded swastika Luftwaffe daggers for sale throughout the year, they have all but dried up in the market place. Have a look at the sweet example in this listing.
An excellent grip and hilt assembly begins the description on this SMF Luftwaffe officer’s dagger. The Trolon grip is in near perfect condition, being void of any chips, cracks, splits, or missing material. The squash colored material is a little bit lighter on the reverse than on the obverse. Tightly wrapped around the circumference and in place, is the springy decorative wire that this firm was known to have used on their 2nd model line up. Both the crossguard and pommel project a natural aluminum finish, and both have beautiful burnishing in the recesses to highlight the features of each component. And speak about the pommel, take a look at both sides of this one. That’s right, the gorgeous gold gilding remains at 100% on both sides! As most collectors know, rarely do you ever see that with even with the best preserved 2nd model Lufts. Besides that, there were only a couple Solingen companies who actually took this extra process to beautifully enhance their pommels as shown. And no firm did it better than the craftsmen who worked at SMF. On the reverse of the crossguard is a name. It’s hard to see let alone photograph, because of the pebbled surface of these handguards, and the way that they were manufactured. The best that I can make out is possibly “ Dr. Roux”. If the next owner of this dagger comes up with more definitive spelling I can check it against my Luftwaffe officer’s list to see if the name appears on it. Lastly, a nice toned 23cm portapee is shown in the photos wrapped around the ferrule section of this hilt.
The scabbard to this edged weapon is a fantastic sheath. It remains straight, void of any bends, dog legs, dings, hits, or splits. The factory airplane gray finish is one of the best that you will see, and rates 99%. I’m telling you, it just doesn’t get any better. Both unique “fingerprint” SMF scabbard band are tight to the shell, and hold the hanger rings properly. 2 flat head screws secure the throat. Totally beautiful scabbard here, gentlemen.
And lastly the blade. It is full length, straight, void of any tipping, sharpening, bends, or cutting edge chips. It has a few minor surface blemishes to the factory plating. But for everything else this beautiful edged weapon has going for it, they are very minor in comparison. On the reverse of the blade is shown the small eagle Waffenamt stamp, and the nicely burnished seated king logo of the famous Stoker edged weapon firm.
