Partial Rohm SA Honor Dagger by Eickhorn – D1146
These so called partial Rohm SA’s are rather historic edged weapons in themselves. They were they awarded to recognize those who had pledged allegiance to the NSDAP movement gaining strength in Nazi Germany during the early 1930’s. They were instituted by the SA leader Ernst Rohm who was later declared a traitor to the Reich, in order to wield away the power that he had with his paramilitary army then numbering 3 million strong. After his overthrow, these honor daggers were to be destroyed. Or at the very least, to have had the Reichsleiter’s dedication and name removed by grinding the reverse of the blades of these edged weapons. The order from SS Reichsfuhrer Himmler was to have the complete acid etched salutation and Rohm signature, totally removed from the blades of these honor daggers. In defiance of that order, some of these SA Rohm daggers are in rare occasions found with only the Ernst Rohm signature “erased”. Here is one such desirable dagger in this offering.
Typical and textbook for these Rohm Honor daggers manufactured by the famous edged weapon firm of Carl Eickhorn, is the excellent oak grip shown on the hilt of this SA. It remains in fine condition, void of any fractures, splits, excessive pressure marks, or missing chunks. As with the wood, the nickel silver eagle as well as the SA runes button are shown in the photos just as well preserved. Both upper and lower crossguards have taken a golden hue to their surfaces, and remain nice and smooth. Even the pommel nut holding this hilt completely solid is void of any abuse or marks from being taken down by usually curious owner in the past.
The scabbard to this dagger is pretty decent overall. The shell remains straight, void of any bends, creases, hits, or dings. Though the factory chemical browning process has worn thin from probably being carried daily by its original owner, it has not been touched up nor repainted in any way or form. It still rates at 80% on the obverse, and a little lighter on the reverse. Both upper and lower nickel fittings are in place, with the later showing some typical hits to the surface, though no splitting. The solid nickel hardware while having the same golden tone as the hilt hardware, do show that they have cleaned in the past at some point. Lastly, the throat is secure and held solid by the proper period screws.
And we come to what makes this blade so special. That being the partial dedication which you can see still intact on the reverse, with only the Ernst Rohm name removed. At that, this blade remains straight, full length, void of any tipping, sharpening, buffing, polishing, or cutting edge chips. There is some surface darkening and oxidation spots as you can see in the photos. But for one of these surviving historic so called partials, honestly not all detracting. There were documented 125,000 of these Rohm SA daggers produced and awarded in early 1934. Though collectors rarely encounter examples with the dedication remaining on the reverse of the blade. The Alles fur Deutschland motto still has it’s nice light gray factory burnishing to to each and every letter of the etch. And the same is true on the reverse side showing the Reichsleiter’s dedication reading ” in heartfelt comradeship”. The grinding of the name was possibly done by the owner of this dagger, while he was careful to keep the Eickhorn small double oval trademark intact. How neat is that?
Grab this one, you don’t encounter these partial Rohms all that often! And this is a nice example. SOLD
