Mint Red Cross Hewer – D807

Every once in a while collectors will encounter a 3rd Reich edged weapon taken from a Solingen firm after the war in unissued condition. Many times these pieces though never sold, are in so so condition. Lack of craftsmanship, haphazardly assembled process, and inferior war time materials, are some contributing factor in what we can see with new left over stock. Not so with the Red Cross hewer offered in this listing. Have a look.

The hilt to this DRK EM hewer is like every other component on this edged weapon. And that is, about as mint as they come. The crossguard, front / back strap, and pommel have near perfect lacquer coated fittings throughout. There is just a tiny bit of surface aging to the hilt straps as shown in the photos. In spite of that, nothing is compromised, and no lifting has occurred. Likewise the crisp checked grip plates too, are pristine and rarely encounter in this fine preserved state. They are perfect in every respect, and held solid to the hilt with 2 untouched screws.

The scabbard to this Red Cross hewer is a thing of beauty. Perfectly straight, void of any hits or creases, with the 65 year old black enamel rating 99.9%. The lower pressed on fitting is firm and seated to the base of the shell, while the upper secured by 2 factory inserted screws. With this scabbard is the original leather frog that this hewer came with. The leather is in great shape, with all of the period surface die, stitching intact, and rivets properly in place. The letter “H” can be seen on the reverse stamped into the leather.

Finally the blade. As you would expect, it is in magnificent condition to match all of the other components of this edged weapon. The surface has a couple ticks of storage age which are hardly worth mentioning. As nothing has been cleaned nor polished on this blade ever. The saw tooth edge remains unbelievably razor sharp throughout. A gorgeous fine line crossgrain adorns both sides of the matte surface of this blade. Up underneath of the crossguard is usual stamp of Ges. Geschuzt found on these hewer blades. A thick black leather protective wash is in place, and solid up against the under hilt.

This is the 2nd DRK minty hewer on our site. When both are gone, there are bound to be a few collectors regretting not stepping up for one of these beauties. Both are truly exceptional examples.  SOLD
