Mid Period SS Chain Dagger – D1167
Though not the rarest edged weapons produced during the 3rd Reich, the model 36 SS chain dagger is certainly at the top of the list for some collectors in regard to desirability. Here is any untouched example in this offering.
The grip to this SS dagger remains in fine condition overall, considering how fragile these handles usually are known to be. It is void of any splits, cracks, repairs, or large chips. There is one superficial flake to the lower obverse, and that is basically it. As typical for this era of manufacture, the grip emblem is aluminum, whereas the SS runic a coppery color. Both insignia are in fine condition and have been expertly set straight and flush to the wood. The hardware during this period of construction was plated zinc and held in place by a steel pommel nut. As you can see the lower obverse fitting has suffered a bit more lifting than the other surfaces of this set of crossguards. Something fairly common when manufactures were prohibited from the earlier materials, they once were able to use. Around the handle is laced a 43cm portapee.
A decent scabbard accompanies this M36 so called chain dagger. The shell remains straight, void of any hits, splits, creases, or bends. The original factory chemical bluing has held up surprisingly well, abet for the lower section of the reverse of the shell, and the plated fitting. The oxidation present was most likely the result of what the scabbard was laying on while being stored. It is what it is, as the rest of the scabbard, upper fitting, and chain remain in excellent condition.
Lastly the blade……………. And it’s stone mint!
If you’ve been looking for an affordable example for some time, perhaps the one for you. RESERVED
