M33 SS Dagger by Schaaff – D882

Though I’ve seen some RZM SA’s and HJ’s by this manufacture, this is the first time that I’ve had the opportunity to inspect and offer an SS dagger by this manufacture. That said, I assume that it’s a pretty rare maker M33 for this smaller edged weapon firm.

The grip while exhibiting some stress lines over the years, is void of any repairs, breakage, or unsightly missing wood chips. As with some SA’s of the same vintage by this company, both grip insignia are of nickel silver. In essence placing the timeline construction of this dagger probably around 1938-39. The eagle is a upward beak so called variety bird. It has been expertly centered in the obverse of this handle, and set nice and flush. There is a little bit of surface wear across the bird, though not all  that terribly detracting. At the top of the grip, the SS runes button is a beauty! All of the silvering is intact to the lightening bolts and decorative dual circumference border circles. Both upper and lower crossguards are plated. As typical for this type of hardware, they show some minor lifting where the metal was probably affected by the once present moisture in the wood handle.

The scabbard to this dagger is pretty decent. The shell remains mostly straight, void of any major hits, bumps, creases, or bends. There is one smaller deformity on the edge, on the carrying ring side. The period black enamel while showing plenty of wear and age, still has very good coverage rating 90%. Both upper and lower fittings are secure to the shell, and held firm by the proper dome head screws. The plated finish of the hardware has taken on the appearance and look matching that of the hilt fittings.

Lastly, we finish up with the blade. Like every other component on this SS dagger, it basically is untouched. It remains full length at 220mm, void of any cutting edge chips, buffing, sharpening, or tipping. The tip has a more broad finish, very much like we will see with J.P. Sauer blades on their SA’s. In spite of that it is not shortened, nor re-dressed. The surface remains in the typical matte finish common with these political daggers produced during the RZM period. An excellent dark burnished Meine Ehre heist Treue motto is shown perfect etched and centered straight down the obverse. Each and every letter as black as the day that it was laid down by the craftsman who etched this beautiful motto. On the reverse is the RZM contract number 7/56, that of the firm which manufactured this rare SS dagger, the C.D. Schaaff company.

Probably an M33 SS dagger by a manufacture you won’t encounter all that often, if ever.   SOLD
