M33 SS Dagger by Herder – D1062

Been having any luck finding a decent early SS dagger out there? Well, we’re right with you on that quest. That market, as well as well as several other categories within the 3rd Reich collectibles is rather slim these days. In this offering is a pretty decent Herder which just came in, and probably better than you have been seeing offered as of late.

In the typical shape that collectors are accustomed to, the slender profile of the grip to this early SS is very typical of the handles we encounter on the daggers manufactured by this renown edged weapon firm. While the textbook high contour handle exhibits some surface pressure marks here and there, it remains void of any repairs, splits, chips, cracks, flaking or missing material. The nickel eagle has been set flush and straight just below the centerline on the obverse of this grip, and is in excellent condition with wonderful detail. At the top just under the upper crossguard, the SS runes button exhibits a bit more wear. As shown, the surface silvering is worn on the dual circles as well as the lightening bolts of this emblem. Additionally, the enamel has suffered some chipping as well. In lieu of that, the good thing is that it has not been repaired, repainted, dug out, nor is it a replacement runic. It’s sometimes expected wear and tear from and edged weapon like this which was worn often, and quite often daily by some SS soldiers. Both upper and lower crossguards are nice and smooth on both sides, with the lower reverse district stamped Roman numeral I. The hardware projects a dull muted patina over their surfaces, as nothing has been polished nor cleaned on this early Herder SS dagger.

The scabbard to this edged weapon remains straight, void of any major hits, dings, splits, or bends. It is fairly apparent that when the factory oxidize bluing wore thin on this shell, the owner freshened it up with some black enamel  in order to maintain a spit and polished look to go with his black Allgemeine uniform attire. The paint is thick, aged, displaying wear and use, very much like you would expect to see with something done during the era, and by it’s owner. That aside, both upper and lower nickel fittings are in very good shape, and held tight to the shell with the proper factory dome head screws. The muted light gold surface of these fittings exactly match the toning of the hilt crossguards.

An excellent blade completes this Model M33 SS dagger. It remains full length, straight, void of any pitting, sharpening scars, chips, buffing or polishing. The is one small tweak at the very tip of this blade that I tried to show in the photos. Someone probably tried to pry the top off of their beer at one time, with this rather impressive blade. Really not that big of deal for most, because the rest of this blade is about as mint as they get! It has a killer crossgrain from hilt to tip, running down both the obverse as well as the reverse. And talk about dark burnished SS mottos; one look at the photos says it all on this beautiful blade. On the reverse is shown the double oval logo surrounding a stylistic diamond, truly the mark of excellence when it comes to early quality SS daggers.

You don’t see this decent of a nickel silver SS dagger for this price anymore. Grab this one!
