Imperial Herschfanger – D942
This is an attractive long thin etched blade Hirschfanger, which appears to have been awarded as a shooting prize of some sort. The overall length of this edged weapon is 25”, from pommel nut to the tip of the scabbard. The grip consists of a nice section of stag in which the color is a reddish brown. It remains in excellent condition including the 3 brass decorative acorns shown in the center of the obverse. All 3 of the hilt components made up of the clam shell, crossguard, and pommel cap have turned dark with a rich patina over their surfaces. This hilt is wrapped with a dark green knot which is all in place, and appears in an original period tie.
The super thin scabbard to this edged weapon has been preserved in amazingly nice condition. It remains perfectly straight with wonderful dark leather shell covering which is all nicely period sewn and intact. Both upper and lower scabbard fittings beautifully match the toning of the hilt components.
And lastly the blade. It remains straight, void of any sharpening, tipping or cutting edge chips. There is a little bit of pitting at the tip on the obverse side, though not all that terrible for an edged weapon probably 100 years old. On top of that, the plating has held up pretty decent as well, and displays a triple etched floral pattern with a presentation panel on the obverse.
