Full Rohm SA Dagger by Wingen – D1104

While the SA’s manufactured by the Anton Wingen firm rate fairly common on the rarity list, it’s been my experience that they are not all that often encountered. That aside, I do know that surviving full Rohm examples of any SA manufactured by the known 16 firms chosen to produce these edged weapons are desirable, as they are rare as well.  While not perfect, this one will no doubt fit the price range for a collector who always wanted one of these Ernst Rohm Honor Daggers, though not wishing to spend $8000 or more to obtain one.

Typical for this manufacture, the grip to this Wingen SA is a darker chocolate brown. The wood is in fairly decent condition, though exhibiting one crack to the upper reverse. Both the eagle and SA runic remain in good shape, displaying nothing all that detracting to either emblem. The nickel silver upper and lower crossguards remain smooth, and nicely fit the grip on the hilt to this dagger. Both components have taken on a muted dull patina over their surfaces.  The reverse of the lower crossguard is stamped with the letters He, that representing the Hessen SA Gruppe. This area of Germany was reported to have received 5000 of these honor daggers, of the 125,900 which were awarded.

The scabbard to this Wingen produced Storm Trooper’s dagger is in good condition. The shell remains straight, void of any bends, splits, major hits, or dings. There is one very minor crease to the lower reverse that was even hard to show in the photos. While the surface exhibits oxidation as well as crazing to the lacquer which this scabbard once had, the period coppery anodizing still remains approximately 75%. Both upper and lower nickel fittings are in good shape relatively speaking, exhibiting the typical usage of an edged weapon worn probably often. There is one small split to the upper fitting screw on the hanger ring side. In lieu of that, both upper and lower components remain in place and tight to the shell.

No two ways about it, the blade to this Full Rohm SA was probably wiped with an abrasive cleaner or scrub. As you can see, that imparted a dull look to the surface of the steel of this blade. When, why, or by whom this was done is unknown. Who knows, perhaps by the vet who took this war trophy, or even possibly by the original recipient and owner of this edged weapon. Afterall, in the first place the SA man defied the July directive which was put out by Reichsfuhrer Himmler, that the trader Rohm’s name was to be ground off of the blades of these edged weapons immediately! It is possible that the owner of this dagger just chose to “tone” it down a bit, making the Rohm dedication less obvious, and not wanting to destroy his dagger by haphazardly grinding it. That aside, this blade remains full length, void of any tipping, sharpening, or cutting edged chips. While the Alles fur Deutschland motto has been lightened by the process, the entire Rohm dedication and signature has survived extremely well! And for that matter, the small knight logo too, the very early trademark of the Anton Wingen edged weapon firm.

Oh I know, we would all love to see these edged weapons in picture perfect condition. Though in all reality, a Full Rohm SA dagger in any condition is such a rarity in the first place. Besides, when have you ever seen one being offered at this price?   SOLD
