Fantastic Railroad Eagle – G240

When collectors talk about railroad eagle the terms 24” (600mm), 27” (680mm), 28” (720mm) is par for the discussion. But when a 35” (900mm), example is mentioned, all ears perk up! And that is exactly what we have to offer in this listing. This is the elusive 90cm eagle which most collectors dream to just have in their hands one day one day to examine one.

The obverse of this monster eagle is nice and smooth throughout, from wingtip to wing tip. A fantastic muted aluminum patina covers the entire bird, displaying it in the most striking way. It is void of any breakage, bends, cuts, or gouged areas, save for one tiny hole drilled in the center of the eagle’s breast. This appears to have possibly been done by the returning vet to display his prized war trophy, though who really knows. As it may have also been done to shore up the plaque to where it was affixed during the 3rd Reich era, because there isn’t a fastening stud on the reverse in that area. And speaking of where these massive eagles were displayed, we know that they adorned the personal train of the Fuhrer, as there are period photos to show that to be the case. No doubt they were also used by other infamous notables such as Goring and others as well. In any case, they are an absolute striking display to say the least, during the period as well as with collector alike today. The reverse of this example has all 3 threaded studs intact, a rarity on any eagle let alone on one of these 35” examples. In addition the studs were drilled to insert a steel pin which collectors sometimes encounter on other railroad eagles manufactured during the period. Scratched into the right wing is a name which appears to be “K Paul”.  Perhaps that of the returning vet who captured this truly spectacular war trophy.  Truly a fantastic, rare, and highly sought after, 35” rail eagle.  SOLD
