Early Stormtrooper’s Dagger by Sauer – D1182
Though rated fairly common on the rarity scale when it comes to SA daggers, these Suhl manufactured edged weapons are right up there on the desirability chart for many 3rd Reich blade enthusiasts. Here’s why.
As this manufacture who was involved in the production of vary high quality SA daggers, they were also known for making K98 rifle stocks as well. And you can see that correlation with the similarity of wood which they used for the handles on these daggers. Without a doubt a characteristic and a draw to these Suhl produced SA’s. The coarse grain texture of the wood used for this grip remains in fine condition throughout. While it may appear to the viewer that there is a repair on the low right reverse of this grip, it actually is just the striations within the wood grain. If you view the crust between the fittings and the wood, it appears that this dagger has never been apart in my opinion. Both the eagle and the SA runic remain in very nice condition, displaying little if any wear whatsoever. As for the crossguards, they have developed an undisturbed muted patina over their surfaces. As nothing has been cleaned nor polished on this edged weapon since being returned home as a souvenir from WWII.
A very acceptable scabbard accompanies this J.P. Sauer SA dagger. The shell remains straight, void of any hits, splits, bends, or creases. An unbelievable amount of factory brown chemical oxide finish remains on the obverse of this scabbard. And if that isn’t enough, the fragile protective lacquer overcoat rates 99% as well! On the reverse there are some imperfections and surface oxidation as shown. Its not all that bad considering it on the back side opposed to the front. Both upper and lower nickel fittings are in the same condition as the hilt hardware, virtually untouch and uncleaned. Through the upper fitting ring there is an early hanger present. The leather is split right where the buckle prong went through one of the adjuster holes.
As for the blade, it’s sweet! Loaded with a subtle fine line crossgrain which this edged weapon firm was known to put their finishing touches on, that beautiful process runs from hilt to tip, both obverse and reverse. A killer dark burnished Alles fur Deutschland sets this entire blade off with a beautiful visual effect as is apparent in the photos.
