Early SS Dagger by Herder – D1216
The edged weapon firm of Rich Abr Herder certainly manufactured some fine SS daggers during the introductory period when these M33’s first made their appearance. Here is a sweet example.
It may have been due to the slenderer profile handles which Herder chose to use, or perhaps their choice of wood, but the grips on Herder early SS daggers seem to have held up quite nicely compared to other manufactures during the same timeframe. And this example is no different. With that slim look and sharp center contour line, these Herder handles are easily recognized by many blade collectors. One look at the photos tells the story on this grip. It remains in beautiful condition, void of any chips, fractures, breaks or repairs. So nice in fact, it barely exhibits even any surface pressure marks. The nickel silver grip eagle has been set perfectly straight as well as flush to the surface, displaying a darkened patina over it. At the obverse top the SS runic is present and shown with nice silvering over the dual lightning bolts, though a little chipping to the black enamel. Both crossguards are smooth to the touch, with an even muted patina over their surfaces.
A decent scabbard accompanies this Herder M33. The shell remains straight, void of any hits, dings, splits, or bends. The period factory blue oxide finish is in good shape and shown with an attractive undisturbed patina also over its surface. Both upper and lower nickel fittings are tight to the shell and held perfectly in place with 4 untouched factory dome head screws. As shown in the photos, the lower fitting had taken a ding to it.
As we could only hope for, a wonderful blade is a fitting finish touch to this Model 33 Herder SS dagger.
When it comes to early nickel SS daggers, it truly is a challenge to find one this nice. SOLD
