Early Rare Maker SA Dagger by Wolf – D930

Invariably, whenever you find a rare cottage maker Storm Trooper dagger that comes in as a 10 on the rarity list, the quality is usually a 1.5 on the condition scale. That is not the case with this one. Have a look.

The grip to this SA is in good condition. It is void of any chips, flaking, cracks or missing material. The reason that it has held up so nicely is due to the fact that it has an old protective clear lacquer coating over it’s surface. Sometimes this was done by the owner of these edged weapons. Other times it was a common practice of the manufacturing firm. In any event, the wood has held up nicely, and so has most of the clear coating over the wood as well. An excellent point behind the head nickel silver eagle is set straight and centered, showing just minimal surface wear. At the top of the obverse the same can be noted for the SA runes button. Both upper and lower crossguards have taken on a muted golden hue over their smooth surfaces. Off to the right reverse of the lower, the guard is stamped HO for Hochland SA Gruppe.

A decent scabbard accompanies this rare maker SA. It remains fairly straight, with just a very slight vertical crease at the lower reverse. The original period anodizing has oxidized as shown, though actually has a little bit of the original factory lacquer still clinging to the shell near the fittings. The upper and lower nickel silver hardware is solid and secure to this shell, and exhibit the typical surface wear we usually see with these 85 year old daggers. An early snout nose hanger is shown through the upper fitting ring. The leather remains supple and the clip functions properly, though the small retaining loop is gone to time.

I’m telling you, for a rare cottage maker who probably produced less than a total of 100 SA’s, the blade to this dagger is extremely nice. It remains full length, void of any tipping, sharpening, buffing or excessive pitting. One edge at the tip of the blade has a very minor rough feel to it. But truly, for as nice of condition that this blade is, it is hardly worth mentioning. Both obverse and reverse sides of this blade is loaded with a crossgrain finish which collectors love to see. Finally a killer dark Alles fur Deutschland motto is shown perfectly etched straight down the middle of this beautiful blade. On the reverse ricasso is the double XX logo of this elusive maker of these early SA’s, that of the Josef Wolf firm of Munchen.

An excellent early Storm Trooper’s dagger which comes in at a 10 on the rarity list.  SOLD
