Deluxe Forestry Dagger by Alcoso – D826
It’s amazing how much edged weapon that a collector will get in regards for the money, when purchasing a German Hunting or Forestry dagger. These things are truly a work of art. Stag grips, etched blades, gilt fittings, it just doesn’t get any better! This beautiful little gem of a Herschfanger exemplifies that very fact.
The grip plates on the hilt of this dagger display an excellent attractive looking set of thick slab of deer antler sections. Both sides are nicely matched, trimmed, and fit with precision. The 6 acorn emblems which adorn both fore and aft are firmly set in place, void of any movement. Beautiful gilt through out on this entire hilt says it all. The ornate oak leaf hand guard / hoof crossguard, and wild boar in relief on the clam shell, display in the most striking way.
The scabbard to this dagger is excellent. The shell is firm, nice and straight, and void of any leather condition challenges. The lower chape is solid to the sheath, showing wear consistent with this edged weapon being worn by it’s owner. At the top of the scabbard is a short proper hanger that this Hirschfanger came with. The leather is in good order, void of any sewing or stitching issues. Around the top portion looks to be an Imperial type of knot, which came on the hanger as shown.
Finally, the blade. And it’s a sweet one! Full length, void of any tipping, sharpening, pits, or chips, this is one gorgeous example. With high luster plating throughout and a deep floral & fauna etch on both side, this blade is truly a thing of beauty! The etched spine of this blade states that the distributor of this fine edged weapon is the firm of Eckenhoff Nachf out of Berlin. Completing the assembly is the green felt washer that kept this stunning blade so preserved for all of these year. On the reverse riccasso block is shown the last trademark used by the Alcoso firm. That being a set of balancing scales with the letters AWC.
A lot of 3rd Reich Hirschfanger for the money. And a beauty! SOLD
