Herder Full Rohm SS & Honor Ring to Same Recipient

In this offering is not only the extremely rare attributed Full Rohm honor dagger to an early member of the Allgemeine SS, but also his SSTK Totenkopf ring awarded in that very same year. A little background on this set began in 1990 when Thomas Wittmann of Wittmann Militaria sold this particular SS Rohm Honor dagger to one of his customers by the name of Donald Covert who was residing in San Diego CA. In the file on this dagger is a copy of Donald’s letter to Tom stating that the check he was sending was for this dagger he had agreed to purchase from Wittmann Militaria. There is also Tom’s original letter to Donald stating that he had received his check and was mailing the dagger to him in November of 1990.

Also included in the file there is a Don Boyle certificate on the SSTK he inspected in 1998 with the surname of Huber dated 30.6.34 on the inner band of the ring. The certificate was issued to a collector by the name of Kenneth Thompson. In Don’s handwritten notes, it is stated that the ring had come from the Captain Black collection. This is the same ring which was later purchased by Charles Hamilton who, by the way, was the author of the reference Leaders and Personalities of the Third Reich.

As many collectors know, Captain Theodor M Black was the first American soldier to enter the partially destroyed Wewelsburg Castle during the invasion of Germany at the close of WWII. It was there where he found of box containing about 200 SS-Totenkopfringes. Army Captain T Black distributed the rings among his men, while keeping 6 of them for himself. 3 rings were sold at auction from Captain Black’s estate in the year 1984. The ring in this offering is one from the estate auction that was purchased by Hamilton, and then later on by Kenneth Thompson.

Additionally, there is a typed letter from Craig Gottlieb Militaria to a collector describing how he purchased the Huber ring from a collector in February 2005. In the letter Craig said he contacted Bernie Brule to see if the SS researcher could possibly narrow down the recipient “Huber” inscribed in the band of this ring. Bernie came back with the information that there was only one SS officer with the surname of Huber which received the SS-Totenkopfringe in 1934. And that was Untersturmfuhrer Karl Huber, SS #1890. Later this same year Gottlieb purchased the Full Rohm SS dagger in this offering from the edged weapon collection of Don Covet. When checking the number on the back of the crossguard of this edged weapon Craig discovered that this Full Rohm Honor dagger and like the ring, was attributed to the same SS officer, Karl Huber.

The file is extensive with over 40 copies of documents related to Huber, personal data, his photo, and more. There is also the Gottlieb correspondence, Wittmann receipt, Wittmann photos of the dagger, and Boyle ring certificate. A truly amazing 1934 SSTK and 1934 Full Rohm SS, attributed to the same early member of the Allgemeine SS.

I’ve typed up so much of the chronological background, ownership, and chain of custody on this offering, I’m just going to do just the photos of this phenomenal set. Just holler if you would like a description on any of this grouping and I’ll be glad to do it for you. I can’t think that there possibly is another surviving Full Rohm SS, with matching SS Honor ring all to the same recipient, in existence today. Truly an amazing historic set in every sense of the word and might just be a once in a lifetime opportunity for someones collection.  RESERVED
