35″ 3rd Reich Railroad Eagle – G266
When it comes to the 90cm rail eagles, there are more fakes of this rare and desirable symbol of the 3rd Reich than there was period examples manufactured. Primarily used on “state trains” reserved for the Fuhrer, Goring, Ribbentrop, the Reichsfuhrer and just a few others, these magnificent displays are revered by the collecting community, though rarely ever encountered.
This is a fantastic example displaying a natural patina over its obverse surface. While on the reverse it still retains 2/3 of the factory machined down studs intact. It also has what looks like the veteran’s initials “TK” scratched into the back side as well. This eagle has the chemical symbol for Palladium (Pd) as shown in a photo. While a rare element in today’s mineral market with a price of $900 per ounce, years ago it was somewhat more available to manufactures. And used as an inhibitor against oxidation, is without a doubt the reason it was mixed into the casting material to some percentage by the manufacture of this 35″ eagle.
