3rd Reich Kriegsmarine Dirk by Eickhorn – D1151
When was the last time you encountered a 3rd Reich navy dagger with a Carl Eickhorn trademark on it? No, not the 35-41 stamped logo. Nor even the 41 and later smooth tail squirrel example. But that of a small double oval company logo which is rarely seen but on a few of these early Kriegsmarine daggers. Here is a rare example in this offering.
An excellent off-white Trolon over wood core grip to this early Eickhorn navy begins the description of this fine edged weapon. The material is excellent and void of any noticeable cracks, splits, or chips to this super tight and firm handle. The customary double strand copper wire is neatly wrapped all in place, and properly set within the decorative grooves. This hilt has been period wrapped with a nice Kriegs portapee which covers much of the heavy brass crossguard. The knot is in excellent condition, being void of the usually fraying associated with these accoutrements laced on many navy dirks. Holding all the components of this hilt solid and tight is a 1938 “replacement pommel” which you would expect to see match to such and early Eickhorn trademarked double oval logo. As most know, the Reichmarine name was changed in 1935 to the régime’s new adopted name, that being the Kriegsmarine. Though the flaming ball pommel on these navy daggers remained in place until 1938, when the eagle design was the new order component for these edged weapons. Those with the early flaming ball pommels on them were then fitted with the new component. Very much as you see with this dagger as well.
A fine scabbard accompanies this Eickhorn Kriegs dirk. For being manufactured out of softer brass, this shell has survived the test of time amazingly well. It remains straight, void of any splits, creases, hits, dings or other damage. The shell projects an un-cleaned / un-polished surface, which beautifully complements the rest of this dagger. Both scabbard bands are in place and hold the hanger rings properly. 2 side screws secure the throat.
As for the blade, it’s a beauty! Just take a look at the photos and judge for yourself.
