680mm Railroad Eagle by Henschel – G253
These 27” rail eagles were the size which we see in period photos, and affixed to the sides of locomotives during the 3rd Reich era. The example in this offering certainly has the look of one that was used for that purpose. All covered with soot with a dark patina, this is the look which collectors love to see with one of these beautiful displays. The surface of this example appears to have a thin layer of sprayed on clear lacquer that it has lightly coated over it at some point, which was probably done to keep that attractive appearance intact. It possibly could be remove if desired by the next owner. Though I wouldn’t encourage it, as it takes nothing away from the desirability of this nice example. All of the features and detail of the eagle, wreath, and swastika are fantastic, with the plaque being nice and straight, void of any bends, breakage, or holes. On the reverse is a special treat for most collectors. Not only are all the original turned down integral bolts still intact, but in addition all of the period steel mounting hex nuts present as well. In all of the eagles I’ve owned over the years, I can certainly count on one hand those which had the original hardware present. Lastly and typical for this manufacture, the companies initials as well as the compound make up of these plaques is shown on the reverse right wing: HE GAL Mg Si. A large railroad eagle, with all the bolts and hardware. $6500.00
