Weimar Hunting Hirschfanger by Eickhorn – D1101

In this offering is a good looking hunting dagger manufactured during the era leading up to the 3rd Reich. As you’ve noticed already the crest on the obverse in the stag grip of this beautiful toned hilt. That is the emblem which was used to honor the throne of Duke Fredrich II & his wife Duchess Marie of Anhalt, after the duke had passed away in 1918. The handle to this Hirschfanger is an attractive section of stag horn with is nicely toned, being darker on the obverse, to a little lighter on the reverse. The grip is in excellent condition, void of any chips or splits. As mention already, the large crest with a crown over above represent the intertwined initials of the royal family of the duke and duchess. As shown, the clam shell, crossguard, ferrule, and pommel cap, have all taken on a gorgeous rich patina over their surfaces.

A decent scabbard accompanies this attractive edged weapon. The thin green leather covered shell remains in fine condition, void of any rips, tears, stitching issues or dry rot condition, while exhibiting just a few very minor scuffs. The staple holding the lower fitting is just a little loose. A fairly common occurrence for one of these 100 year old shells. As shown in the photos, that lower fitting does have one depression to the obverse. The upper fitting remains in good shape, solidly in place, and like the lower is black as all get out just like the hilt hardware.

The triple etched blade to this edged weapon is full length, straight, void of any sharpening, buffing, or cutting edge chips. There is some surface imperfections as a result of the trapped moisture in the wood scabbard runners that this blade was stored it. Once again, for a blade this old it’s not all that detracting considering the era that it was produced. Additionally, this blade has quite a dark etch when compared to most produced during this timeframe.  On the reverse riccasso is shown the early Eickhorn squirrel trademark with simply the letters C.E. underneath of the logo.

Beautiful appeal to this Weimar period hunting association dagger.    $1195.00
