3rd Reich Produce Hunting Dagger by Wingen – D1041
Though few DJ Hirschfangers were manufactured during the 3rd Reich era compared to the years prior, this example is the exception rather than the rule. A nice section of stag forms the grip on the hilt of this rather elusive manufacture of Nazi era hunting daggers. The deer horn is in good condition, and void of any chips, crack, or breakage. In the center of the obverse and firmly pinned into place, is the all important German Hunting association grip emblem. Though all the detail is still nice and crisp, the fragile surface silvering has gone to time. All of the hardware components to this hilt have taken on a nice dark undisturbed patina, as nothing has been cleaned nor polished on this edged weapon since being returned home as a souvenir from WWII.
An excellent scabbard accompanies the 13” blade of this Hirschfanger. The shell remains straight, void of any bends, breaks, or creases. A beautiful leather covering is shown complete on both obverse and reverse, which is void of any splitting, gouges, or dry rot. Both upper and lower fittings have taken on the same dark patina as those of the hilt components. Save for a section at the top, where a frog must have been present at one time. The area of that top fitting where the acorn lug is attached, exhibits some misshaping and slightly depressed. As if something must have lie atop of that portion of the this scabbard at one time, and pressed down on it. An added hanger at some point will do the trick.
We finish up with the blade, and it’s a dandy. It remains full length, straight, void of any pitting, tipping, sharpening or cutting edge chips. There is just a speck of very light surface age above the riccasso area, barely worth noting. Typical for this uncommon manufacture if and when ever encountered, the flora & fauna hunting design is lightly etched down both sides of this blade. While the blade washer is gone to time, the area where it once lay reveals the name of this manufacture of this edged weapon; AW JR, Solingen.
A genuine 3rd Reich produced hunting dagger, by an edged weapon firm rarely seen to manufacture these DJ’s. $1995.00
