2nd Model Navy Dagger by Eickhorn – D790

This offering is for a very attractive 3rd Reich navy dirk. The photos depict an excellent grip and hilt assembly which starts off this description. As the norm for this maker, the handle is the typical off white Trolon material, over wood core variety. It remains in excellent condition, being void of any chips, cracks, or missing material that I can see. Wrapped around the circumference is a double strand of twisted decorative brass wire, all in place and tight to the grip. It’s always nice to get one of these navies in which the pommel is tight and faces the correct obverse position. As many times the shrinkage of the internal wood core of these handles presents a problem that will set the pommel askew when tightened down. But not on this example, as all is firm and tight, with the pommel facing outward. Finishing off this hilt assembly is a beautiful gold toned portapee, tied in the correct reef clove hitch, which certainly looks period laced and original to this dagger.

As an extra cost to the original Kriegs officer, this edged weapon is equip with the optional hammered scabbard sheath. The peened fish scale appearance is stunning on this scabbard, because of the amount of period gilt still remaining on this shell. The scabbard remains fairly straight, with just slightest deformity toward the tip, typical of the soft brass composition of these edged weapons. Both oak leaf scabbard bands are in place, and hold the hanger rings properly. Two dome head screws secure the throat in place.

We finish up with the blade, and it’s a beauty! Perfectly straight and drawn to a needle sharp tip, the blade to this Eickhorn Kriegs dagger is a honey. If anything to complain about is the very typical oxidation in the riccasso sections, where the wood runners of the scabbard was known to trap a little moisture. In lieu of that, the rest of the plating is very nice on this entire blade. And take a look at that super dark foul anchor etch! It doesn’t get any better. On the reverse of the blade is the stamp squirrel logo which the Carl Eickhorn firm used from 1935-41.
