3rd Reich Rural Police Bayonet by Horster – D868

A collector can always spot the police bayonets which were produced by the E.F. Horster edged weapon firm, as the grip plates are as thick as tree trunks! And that is exactly what this one is. The beautifully matched stag sections on the hilt of this bayonet are in fine order. Nicely trimmed, expertly fit, they remain tightly riveted to the spine. As shown, a good looking aluminum police style eagle has been set centered, tight, and straight, onto the obverse plate. Most collectors are aware that this is where the Imperial starburst eagle was previously pinned, when these bayonets were utilized during the Prussian period. Excellent relief and detailed plating is shown to the heavy crossguard and eagle head pommel areas. On the reverse of the crossguard is stamped the following property stamps; L.D. 191. This stands  for the Dusseldorf district, weapon number 191. This same number though not shown, corresponds with the  same which is stamped on the reverse of the upper scabbard fitting.

The scabbard to this police bayonet is in good condition. Though the dyed brown finish has worn over the years, the shell remains in good shape. Both upper and lower fittings remain tightly stapled in place. At the top of the scabbard is a dated and maker marked brown frog. Wrapped around it is a period rural police knot.

The blade to this bayonet is pretty decent. As typical for these Imperial edged weapon converted over for use during the 3rd Reich, the tip of the blade shows evidence of being cut down and re-pointed. Additionally, the plated surface has some scuffing here and there. All in all, still a decent blade by a desirable maker.
