3rd Reich Forestry Deluxe Cutlass by Eickhorn – D1257
This is a fantastic Nazi era subordinate forestry dagger which was produced by the Carl Eickhorn edged weapon firm, and a personal favorite model for me when it comes to Hirschfangers.
It all begins with wonderful thick stag grip plates which are nicely matched, trimmed, and fit with precision. A set of 3 acorns are shown on both sides which are toned and set firmly into the horn grip halves. The gilt wash to the handguard as well as clam shell / crossguard & ferrule has held up beautifully to say the least. Around the hilt is the forestry knot which by all in tent and purposes looks to be the original laced accoutrement to this very nice Hirschfanger.
An excellent scabbard accompanies this sharp looking Eickhorn cutlass. Considering these leather covered shells at time can show quite a bit of deformity and stitching issues; this scabbard is the exception. As shown in the photos, the leather has held up beautifully on this sheath. Both upper and lower fittings are in good condition, while exhibiting excellent detail to the stag design on the obverse of the later. The small staples which are used to hold these fittings secure are gone to time. Quite often they are loosened over the years. The fittings appear in place presently. If needed at some time some light leather / metal adhesive would most likely secure them soundly.
Lastly, an excellent dark burnished hunting scene puts the final touches on this desirable Eickhorn foresty Hirschfanger.
