2nd Model Navy by WKC – D560

2nd Model Navy Daggers in decent condition are somewhat a challenge to find for collectors. Their soft brass scabbards which are easily dented and fragile egg shell grip coatings, are the main factors which plague these edged weapons. Here’s a pretty decent one in this offering, and void of the normal inherent issues which many of these dirks have.

The off white colored grip on this navy is in fine condition, void of any cracks, chips or missing material. It fits nice and tight within the hilt, showing minimal shrinkage often associated with these handles. Tightly wrapped around the circumference of this grip is a double strand of decorative wire, all in place. As shown, the brass gilt fittings consisting of the crossguard and pommel do show some age and lifting over the years that this dagger was carried and then stored after the war. It’s nice for a change that the eagle pommel is facing the correct forward position, and snug into place. So many of these grips were prone to the wood shrinking, that often times the pommels will not align properly. Finally, the blade release button is in the proper position and works fine. A fine looking grip and hilt assembly on this WKC navy.

Not only is it a chore to get a decent scabbard on any navy dagger, but to get this one with this much gilt is special in it’s own right. This shell is straight, void of any major hits or dings, with moderate wear and age overall. As mentioned, the original factory fire gild gold is very strong on this shell, still covering 90%. Both scabbard bands are firmly sweat to the proper position on the shell, and hold the hanger rings in place. 2 untouched dome head screws secure the throat solid. Pretty amazing to see this much gilt remaining on one of these Kreigsmarine dagger scabbards.

Finally to complete this 2nd pattern navy daggers is a drop dead, stone mint blade! It’s straight with a needle sharp tip, gorgeous plating, and an absolutely stunning fouled anchor etch. It has a minute bit of age on the riccasso areas, which is very typical of these dirks. It’s where the wood runners rested to hold them steady in the scabbards. As normal for the WKC edged weapon firm logo of a knight’s head trademark, it is shown lightly stamped on the obverse side of this blade. A partial red felt washer is all that is left of the blade protector. But man what a job it’s done!
