2nd Model Navy by Luneschloss – D617

Collectors don’t often see 3rd Reich Navy daggers which sport non-etched blades. When they do, they are equipped with lightning bolt pattern scabbards, and off white Torlon grips over a wood base. This beautiful dirk defies any non-etched example that I have ever encountered. Have a look.

The absolutely gorgeous grip on this Kreigsmarine dagger is the best that I’ve ever seen on any 3rd Reich produced navy. The solid dark orange Torlon handle is in excellent condition, void of any chips, splits, or missing material. Tightly wrapped around it is a double strand of decorative wire, all snug and in place. The beautiful brass fittings consisting of the crossguard and pommel have turned dark with an undisturbed patina, and age of 70 plus years. The hardware projects red tones which is associated at times with fittings seen on F.W. Holler produced dirks. Quite possibly an indication of the firm that manufactured these components for the smaller Luneschloss edged weapon company.  On the reverse of the crossguard the blade release button is in place, and functions fine. Lastly, wrapped around the grip and hilt is cellon knot, in proper reef tie, encrusted in place. A stunning looking grip and hilt assembly in it’s entirety.

The hammered scabbard which accompanies this dagger beautifully matches the hilt fittings. And like that hardware, it has taken on a that very unique red tone also. The shell is fairly straight, with just a couple imperfections where the soft brass is slightly creased. Both oak leaf scabbard bands are solid to the shell, and hold the hanger rings properly. 2 matching dome head screws secure the throat in place. These hammered scabbards representing the scales on a fish at sea, are always a favorite of edged weapon collectors. And this is one beautifully toned example of such.

As mentioned, the blade to this dagger is the non-etched variety. It is straight, full length, void of any sharpening nor tipping, and is tight in the hilt fittings. It’s plated surface displays a little surface age, but not all that detracting. The thin wafer leather blade washer is present, and firmly seated against the crossguard butt plate. And lastly the seldom encountered rare trademark of the PD Luneschloss edged weapon firm is shown on the obverse ricasso.

Rare trademark, hammered scabbard, killer orange grip. This is a beautiful 3rd Reich navy!  SOLD
