1st Model Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger by SMF – D760

SMF was certainly a premier manufacture of 3rd Reich edged weapons. Here is an excellent 1st model in this offering.

As you can seen the fittings on this 1st model are totally uncleaned, untouched. There is nothing more beautiful than one of these fliers dolchs made in early solid nickel quality, in which the fittings have all darkened like with the dagger shown. That down swept wing crossguard has a Medieval look to it like what I would envision on a Teutonic knight’s massive 2 handed sword. Like the pommel, the crossguard has taken on the most rich undisturbed patina imaginable. All 4 brass inserts show the silvering in the legs of the swastikas, as nothing has been polished nor cleaned on this edged weapon for nearly 80 years. The Moroccan leather covered wood grip has a few of the typical scuffs, as most do. Common for these handles, the blue / gray dye color has darken with sweat and moisture from it’s owner’s hand steadying this edged weapon while in wear. Highlighting this grip is the customary double strand of decorative wire tight, and all in place. A fantastic hilt on this awesome looking long dagger.

With these 1st model Lufts the scabbard leather is always a challenge. Prone to dry rotting, splitting, gouges and digs, the leather at times on the shells has taken a toll. But not on this one. As shown, the original factory leather is in fantastic condition, rating 99%. Rarely will collectors find the leather on a 1st model Luft scabbard, as near perfect as what we have here. Especially a real early example as the one in this listing. All 3 nickel silver fittings are super tight to the shell, and held in place by 5 countersunk screws. Completing this scabbard is the solid nickel chain assembly with corresponding heavy duty unmarked clip. Truly, one of the best scabbards that you will see on such an early edged weapon manufactured circa 1934.

We complete this description with the blade. And sweet lord is it ever pristine! Full length with fantastic plating and minimal runner marks, this blade is what edged weapon collectors seek with a vengeance. With a bright surface both obverse and reverse, few 1st models of any vintage will have a blade like the one shown here.  If there were anything to pick on it would be an extremely minor speck of age at the very tip. But in all sincerity, I’m overcritical to even mention that. As it doesn’t get much better than what you are seeing in these photos. The leather blade washer is like new, and up again the butt plate of the crossguard. It did it’s job in protecting this gorgeous blade for all of these years. On the reverse the seated king trademark proclaiming the excellence of the firm which made this beautiful 1st model so many years ago; SMF

A fantastic early nickel 1st model Luft, in every sense of the word.    SOLD
